Starting a business and growing it to profitability requires a lot of hard work, patience, passion, a great set of personal and professional skills, ambition, financial literacy… the list is long. And, of course, there isn’t one formula to follow that guarantees you success.
In entrepreneurship, 2 + 2 doesn’t always equal 4; ‘a’ doesn’t always come before ‘b’; and the things aren’t just black and white. Running a business is full of challenges and surprises. You can’t be prepared for everything, but you shouldn’t expect a smooth ride.
While determining what being successful means to you is a personal experience, there are some universal tips that will more or less help you enhance your chances of achieving your goals. Here are 10 of these tips that drive success and are useful not just for entrepreneurs, but for everybody who wants to become more successful in their lives:
Don’t wait to be absolutely ready
If you wait for the perfect moment to come to launch your business, the chances are that you won’t ever start. Instead, start small, work hard, move forward with a small step. You can’t fail if you don’t start but you can’t win also. So, start today, with what you have and what you know, and learn along the way. In the end, the journey is even more exciting than the final destination.
Don’t focus solely on the tasks that you can do. Expand your horizon, embrace different tasks, read about different topics, do research not only on your niche but in other sectors as well. Be curious when it comes to information – the more you know, the better.
Running a business doesn’t have to be a lonely journey. Along the way, you will make many enemies, but you will make many friends as well. Treat your business partners with respect, be honest with them, and build the foundations of long-term relationships and partnerships from day one.
Networking – online and offline – is very important for business owners. Communicating with many different people at networking events is a great way to meet interesting personalities, to hear great stories, to exchange ideas, and get a new perspective on important topics. Be open to networking.
Don’t limit yourself
If you put a limit on your dreams and thoughts, you are limiting your vision and your actions are also limited. Expand your horizon – as Donald Trump has said: “As long as you’re going to be thinking anyway, think big.” Apparently, this mindset worked perfectly for him – look at where is he right now.
Playing safe will make your business one of the mediocre businesses out there that have limited potential to grow. Don’t be afraid to take risks – if you do the ordinary you will get only ordinary results.
It is a fact – people rarely actively listen to what the others say. When you have a conversation (with your co-founders, with your employees, or business partners), be absolutely present and pay full attention to what has been said.
This skill will make you a great conversationalist. It will also save you a lot of time and stress – by being an active listener you are more likely to eliminate misunderstandings and will shorten tremendously the length of the office meetings.
Don’t take things personally
In business, you need to be nice but not naive. So, when others are “not so nice” with you, don’t take it personally. Along your entrepreneurial journey, you will get head to head with many people. You will hear a NO so many times, which can be very discouraging. This is why you need to learn not to take things personally and to move on.
But make it personal
Success comes much easier to those who are passionate about what they do. Build your business around solving a problem that you can rely to. If you jump into the business world chasing some random opportunity and filling a small market gap, you may be able to make money, but probably not to build a long-lasting business. Without passion, many people give up when the market gets tough and the competition stronger.
Take care of yourself
If you are not healthy and in good mental state you won’t be able to effectively run your business. So, don’t risk your health and mental stability by working way too hard, not scheduling time to relax, and giving up to stress. If you want to achieve success at any level of your life, start by caring about yourself.
