Every year we organize The Pitcher event with the ambition to give the attending entrepreneurs the opportunity to meet some of the most prominent investors from the MENA region and to network and build a relationship with like-minded startup enthusiasts and innovators from around the world. Organizing a pitching event of such a scale is extremely exciting and very inspirational because it brings real value to the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Every year in mid-April, we turn one usual Saturday into a day full of opportunities to build the foundations of new meaningful relationships that can lead to future business collaborations and partnerships.
Being present at a networking event of such a scale is not enough if the entrepreneurs don’t take full advantage of the situation and actively communicate. Of course, not every person has excellent networking skills, but it is important for entrepreneurs to develop these skills as much as they can.

The following steps are very easy to follow but are very practical and will help you to awaken the master relationship builder that you truly are.
Have an agenda
Networking events that host so many people can be distracting. There are so many people who you want to meet and so less time to do so. It is important to prioritize. We always announce early the names of the important investors, who will attend The Pitcher. It is a great opportunity for the entrepreneurs to do their homework. Check the portfolios of the investors and find your perfect match.
Make the first step
Don’t wait for the perfect moment to begin a conversation with somebody you are interested in meeting. It may never come. Approach the person that you want to meet and introduce yourself. If you are struggling with finding the perfect opening like, try to look for something that you both have in common – the event that you are attending, for example.
Be fully aware of the conversation
To be a master relationship builder you must be a great conversationalist. Listen actively; respond accordingly; lead the conversation to the desired destination naturally; mind your body language; be present; and put your phone away! Be aware not only of the conversation style of your interlocutors but of your own way of speaking and presenting yourself. First impressions matter, so make the best possible one!
Follow-up
Meeting somebody in person is not enough if you want to develop a lasting relationship with them. During the conversation, share with your interlocutor that you want to reach back to them and ask about the best option to do so. Some people prefer LinkedIn, others email, and others find it more convenient to be reached through the phone. And don’t forget to exchange business cards, of course!
